Date: Monday 26 June 2023

Time: 19h00

Topic: Mental health advocacy, awareness and community care: The work of the South African Federation for Mental Health.

Speaker: Shayni Geffen will be our speaker for the evening. Shayni is a public mental health advocate, researcher and practitioner with more than seven years of experience supporting community-based organizations.

For those who do not know, the SAFMH is a national body that works to protect and advocate for the rights of mental health care users.  It raises awareness on mental health and provides mental health information all over the country. Importantly, it works with community-based mental health organizations that deliver essential frontline services to communities, particularly those that are vulnerable and under-resourced.

Currently, Shayni is the Project Leader of Advocacy and Awareness at SAFMH. Here, she provides direction and technical expertise for implementing accessible evidence-based mental health services at a population level, including through Universal Health Coverage efforts.  She holds an MSc in Global Mental Health from King’s College, London, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Shayni is passionate about youth involvement in decision-making and currently serves as a member on the World Health Organization’s Strategic and Technical Advisory Group on Mental Health, Brain Health and Substance Use
