Topic: How to access public sector mental health care for people living with schizophrenia.
Speaker: Mr Waseem Hawa, Principal Clinical Psychologist at Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital.
The meeting will be addressed by Mr Waseem Hawa, Principal Clinical Psychologist at Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital, Convenor of the Child Criminal Capacity Assessment Service (CCCASE) and Chairperson of the Division of Psychotherapy at the University of Cape Town.
Mr Hawa is very well placed to share his expertise with us. He has a strong commitment to public service, and has spent his whole working life in the public and academic sectors.
Having obtained Honours degrees in both Social Work and Psychology from the University of Cape Town, Mr Hawa graduated with a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of the Western Cape in 2010. In 2011 he served as Clinical Psychologist in Community Service at the Outpatients Department of Lentegeur Psychiatric Hospital. From 2012 to 2014 he worked as a Clinical Psychologist at the Department of Correctional Services in Worcester.
Between 2014 and 2018 he returned to Lentegeur, where he worked as Clinical Psychologist in the male acute unit with patients predominantly presenting with psychosis and manic symptoms. He has been at Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital since 2019. He assumed the role of acting Deputy Director of Medical Support in April 2021, and is now Valkenberg’s Principal Clinical Psychologist. He concurrently holds the position of senior lecturer in the Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health at the University of Cape Town. His special interests include substance use, psychosis and neuropsychology
